Method
  1. Heat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Cut in the butter until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Stir in the raisins.
  4. Break the eggs into a measuring cup and add milk until the eggs and milk together come to 2 cups. Add the vanilla.
  5. Pour the wet into the dry and stir just until a soft dough forms. Handle it as little as possible.

Notes

Written in nan's book as: 6 cups flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 1/2 cups butter, 6 tsps baking powder, 1 tsp salt, 4 eggs, 1 cup raisins, 2 cups milk, 1 1/2 tsp vanilla. Bracketed beside the milk and vanilla: egg and milk to equal 2 cups. Bake 375 for 15 to 20 minutes.

The bracket matters. The 2 cups is the eggs and the milk together, not 2 cups of milk on top of 4 eggs.

Her spelling of the title is kept as written.

No yield was written down. Six cups of flour makes roughly two dozen.
